Chilancho Stupa: Preserving Tranquility in the Heart of Kirtipur

Chilancho Mahabihar is a famous Buddhist monastery in Kirtipur. The Chilancho Stupa is thought to be the oldest monument in Kirtipur, but its exact age is not known because proper archaeological studies have not been done. Many people believe it was one of the stupas built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, although there is no clear proof that he or his army ever came to the Kathmandu Valley.

The monastery has a peaceful environment where monks and devotees perform daily prayers and rituals. Inside the vihara, there are statues of Lord Buddha and other Buddhist deities. The walls and courtyards are decorated with traditional art that reflects Buddhist culture and teachings.

The original stupa was built on a natural rock mound and covered with bricks. It has a square base with terraces that get smaller as they go up, topped by a large white dome. On top of the dome is a square structure called a harmika, painted with four pairs of eyes like those on the Swayambhunath stupa. Above the harmika is a beehive-shaped crown made of thirteen rings, which represent the different Buddhist heavens. At the very top is a metal pinnacle with a decorative umbrella. The stupa is about 10.5 meters tall from the base to the top.

Chilancho Mahabihar is also a center of learning. Many Buddhist scholars and students visit here to study about Buddhism, meditation, and philosophy. During special occasions, devotees light butter lamps, chant mantras, and offer flowers. The monastery is a symbol of peace, wisdom, and cultural heritage.
