Uma Maheshwor Temple

Uma Maheshwor Temple, also known as Kwacho Dega, is another important temple in Kirtipur. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva (Maheshwor) and Goddess Parvati (Uma). The temple is built on a hilltop, from where visitors can enjoy a wide view of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayan ranges. 

The temple has a three-tiered pagoda style with beautifully carved wooden windows and doors. Inside, there are statues of Uma and Maheshwor along with other deities It is also a popular place for locals to gather and celebrate religious events.

Since the Uma Maheshwor Temple is situated at top of hill, it served as an ideal watchtower during the battles of Kirtipur. From this elevated position, locals could easily observe the movement of enemy forces approaching the town. The temple not only provided a clear view of the surrounding areas but also acted as a strategic lookout point for planning defensive actions. Additionally, the temple bell played an important role in alerting villagers; its sound would travel far, warning everyone of incoming attacks and gathering them for protection. In this way, the temple became both a sacred place and a centre of defence during times of conflict.

Uma Maheshwor Temple is not only a spiritual centre but also a tourist attraction. The climb up to the temple is rewarding because of the natural beauty and peaceful environment. The temple represents the unity of nature, religion, and culture in Kirtipur, making it a special place for both worshippers and visitors. Even today, people believe that childless couples who worship the deity here will be blessed with children.
