As of the Nepali year BS 2081 (AD 2024), the administration of Kirtipur Municipality is led by Mayor Krishnaman Dangol and supported by Deputy Mayor Subhalaxmi Shakya. Together, they oversee governance, development, and public welfare initiatives in the city. The municipal office, known as the Kirtipur Nagarpalika Office, is located in Naya Bazar, serving as the administrative hub for local governance and public services.

Kirtipur Municipality is divided into 10 wards, each with its own ward office and elected representatives responsible for addressing the local needs of the community. These wards collectively accommodate a population of 81,578, as recorded in the BS 2021 (2018 CE) population census. Over the years, the city has seen gradual population growth and urbanization, with ongoing efforts to balance modernisation with the preservation of its cultural and historical heritage.

The religious composition of Kirtipur reflects its historical and cultural diversity. Hinduism is the predominant religion, with Buddhism being the second-largest religious group. The city is home to people from various communities, but the Newars remain the most prominent ethnic group, playing a significant role in preserving Kirtipur's traditional architecture, festivals, and cultural practices.

Kirtipur's status as a municipality was officially established on Chaitra 14, BS 2053 (1997 CE). Before gaining municipal status, it was part of Lalitpur and consisted of only 19 wards. Over time, Kirtipur developed into an independent administrative unit, with efforts focused on infrastructure development, education, and cultural preservation.

Today, Kirtipur is not only a hub of history and culture but also a growing urban centre. Its local government continues to prioritize sustainable development while fostering a sense of community and cultural pride among its residents.
