Kirtipur Mythology

    Kirtipur, a historic city in the Kathmandu Valley, carries a fascinating legend about its origin. Believed to have been founded in the 12th century, the area was once covered by a vast lake surrounded by hills. In the center of this lake stood a magnificent stupa, admired by many but unreachable due to the surrounding waters.

    According to mythology, a wise and powerful Bodhisattva named Manjushree, who hailed from China, visited the valley to see the stupa. However, the vast lake blocked his path. Determined to reach the sacred site, Manjushree used his divine wisdom and a magical sword to carve a gorge through the hills. This act drained the water from the lake, transforming the valley into fertile land.

    With the lake gone, the stupa was finally accessible, and Manjushree paid his respects. Over time, people began to settle in the newly revealed valley. They built homes, cultivated farmland, and constructed temples, eventually forming the vibrant city of Kirtipur. 

This myth not only explains the founding of Kirtipur but also reflects its deep spiritual and cultural roots. Today, the city is a symbol of resilience and history, blending ancient beliefs with its rich heritage.
